Behind The Scenes: GIVENCHY Haute Couture Fall Collection

30 Jan

This is a couple of years old but I had to share! I toggle back and forth between Alexander McQueen and Givenchy as my favorite designer. To tell you the truth, I heart them both equally! The (2011) Haute Couture collection by Givenchy is simply divine! Magical. Stunning. I can’t even begin to imagine how much time, money, and dedication it took to create each exquisite piece. Riccardo Tisci (Givenchy – creative director) is a total fashion genius! I would love to spend five minutes in his brian…just to witness the brilliant process in creating his one-of-kind collection! J’adore GIVENCHY!!!

Handbag Trend Alert: Orange the “IT” color for Spring 2013

29 Jan

The “it” color for Spring ’13 is bright, bold, and citrus. Yep, folks I’m talking about the good ol’ primary school color – Orange. Handbags everywhere will be showing up in the most luxurious, smooth, sun-kissed orange color come Spring. What better way to usher in the warmer months with a spot of the golden-reddish hue. If you can’t commit to an orange handbag. Why not try a pair of orange strappy sandals or maybe some orange nail polish. However you embrace the trend, just be sure NOT to wear head-to-toe orange. It’s a great look in an editorial spread; not so great on the streets of fashion. I would hate for  someone to mistake you for the mascot of Tropicana orange juice.

Downton Abbey Monday Recaps: Season 3 – Episode 4

28 Jan

Poor, poor sweet Lady Sybil! Our beloved Sybil has died and gone to “TV” heaven. I was in tears when Tom (Sybil’s husband) cried and begged for her not to leave him. What an incredibly emotional scene. Speaking of scenes…..the dying scene was quite traumatic and intense. I mean did we really need to see her convulsing like that. I thought this was Downton Abbey not “Breaking Bad.” I knew Sybil was a goner once Dr. Clarkson and Sir Philip Tapsell started arguing about her condition. Sir Philip’s pride clouded his judgement from seeing the reality of the situation. The arguing only escalated once the family got involved. Everyone was shouting out their concerns for Sybil’s safety. I was yelling at the screen “everybody cool out”, it was too much. As awful as the death of Lady Sybil was – it wasn’t a total surprise. Julia Fellowes (DTA creator) hinted last year that a main character would be killed off in Season 3. I’m deeply saddened that it was Sybil and not her husband. It’s no secret that I’m no fan of Tom. Seeing him killed-off rather than sweet Sybil would’ve been an early birthday present.

Cousin Isobel extended the invitation of employment to Ethel, as a cook at Crawley house. Mrs. Bird currently occupies the position as head cook at Crawley house. However, Mrs. Bird didn’t fancy the idea of working alongside a “woman of the night”, so she gave her notice and left. Apparently, it’s a HUGE no-no to have a former prostitute working in a respectable household. Guilty by associate or some kind nonsense. I really don’t understand what all the fuss is about. I mean all Ethel is trying to do is get back on her feet. Can’t a woman get a second chance. Geesh……

Hey Playa! Alfred, is still trying to put the moves on Ivy. He’s not very smooth but boy is he relentless. Here’s the break down of all the love wars going on downstairs. Daisy is feeling Alfred. Alfred is feeling Ivy. Ivy is feeling Jimmy and Thomas is feeling Jimmy. Jimmy is feeling himself. It doesn’t look like any of the servants will be making a love connection, seeing how they are all in love with the wrong people. Go figure. Daisy is my favorite to watch while being under the spell of love. All that lashing out at Ivy and the shouting of orders makes Daisy a perfect candidate for a woman who could easily slip into a “fatal attraction” mindset. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see Daisy boiling bunnies in episode 5.

Can anyone guess what Mrs. O’Brien is up to? Plotting and planning, folks. Plotting and planning. O’Brien is on a mission to destroy Thomas and it looks like she has found some “bait” – Jimmy. Slowly but surely she is planting the seed that something unseemly is taking place on Thomas’s behalf. I’m pretty sure Jimmy is taking the bait as he is already expressing his concerns regarding Thomas’s touchy-feely ways.

The jig is up! Vera is officially framing Mr. Bates from the grave. Thanks to Anna’s “Sherlock Holmes” tendencies, she has cracked the case against Mr. Bates. All her hard work is finally paying off. Anna must have a serious backlog of PTO. This chick is always running back and forth to London to see about her hubby’s plight. I hope Mr. Bates gets out of the slammer soon. I don’t think the other maids will continue to remain silent about Anna’s never-ending time off.

Mr. Bates and his cellmate have taken a break from their jailhouse shenanigans. Maybe they were tried of all the fighting and framing of one another. I was a bit disappointed as I look forward to the hilarious jail fight  scenes. It would’ve been a welcomed distraction after the untimely death of Lady Sybil. No worries. Based off of the previews for next week’s episode it looks like Mr. Bates and his cellmate will be up to their old fighting ways once again. Can’t wait!

Best Line: “I agree, the decision lies with the chauffeur” – Dowager Countess

Kiki’s Kitchen: 49ers Potato Skins

26 Jan

In honor of the Superbowl next week, I decided to whip up a yummy batch of potato skins. I heart potato skins! The crispy skin, melt cheese, bacon, and chives make for a delicious treat for your mouth. They’re the perfect game day snack. I’ve lovingly dubbed these the “49ers Potato Skins” since I’m a NorCal girl. Next week I’ll be featuring a Baltimore Ravens-inspired recipe. Go Niners!

potatoe skings

STEP ONE: Wash and clean 3 to 4 russet potatoes. Dry them off and rub 1/4 teaspoon of olive oil on the outside of the potato. Using a fork puncture the potatoes six to seven times. Place the potatoes in backing dish and bake for 1 hour in the oven at 400.

STEP TWO: Cut potatoes in half.

STEP THREE: Cut potatoes in quarters.

STEP FOUR: Remove the flesh from the potatoes using a knife or spoon.

scoop out flesh

STEP FIVE: Combine bacon, cheese, and chives in a mixing bowl.

STEP SIX: Sprinkle mixture on top of the potatoes.

Place in baking dish and bake for 15min on 400. Top with sour cream and eat up! YUM!

  • 4 to 8 russet potatoes (about 2 1/4 pounds), scrubbed and thoroughly dried
  • 2 tablespoons Olive Oil
  • Kosher salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese (about 4 ounces)
  • 5 to 6 slices cooked, crumbled bacon

Best Sushi Ever

25 Jan

I’m a bit of sushi snob since I hail of Seattle, Wa. If any of you have ever had seafood in Seattle then you know exactly what I’m talking about. The Seafood in Seattle is unmatched when it comes to freshness, selection, and taste. I started eating sushi when I was in high school and I haven’t looked back. It’s one of my go- to-meals. I’ve had some of the best sushi in the world (or at least I think so), Nobu in NYC, Ozumo in San Francisco, Hawaii, and Asia. Last night I met up with one of my favorite friends for dinner. I had a hankering from some sushi and wasn’t sure where to go, since we were meeting up in the East Bay. I checked out Yelp and found Amakara in Dublin, CA. The reviews were great and I thought I would give it a try. Boy, was my mouth and tummy happy with my decision. The sushi was AH-mazing! The fish was so fresh. It tasted like it was just caught and fillet 10 minutes prior to serving it. My favorite was the Poke Salad and the Salmon Nigiri but I loved EVERYTHING I ordered. The Poke salad has Tuna, seaweed salad, cucumber, red onion, furikake, sesame oil & quail egg yolk. It’s insanely delicious! I’m still dreaming about the Poke Salad. YUM! Double YUM!

Prada unveils “The Great Gastsby” Costume Sketches

24 Jan

Hand sketching is definitely a pass time in the fashion world. Many designers have resorted to a quick and more efficient way of sketching their design ideas by using modern technology like Illustrator or Photoshop. Sketching by hand can be very time-consuming and a labor of the love. The end result however is a designer’s artistic masterpiece. I adore the opportunity to view the hand sketches of celebrated designers like Prada. What a treat to see Miuccia Prada’s costume sketches from the highly anticipated movie – “The Great Gatsby”. The 1920’s beaded striped shift dress is my FAVE! I’m so looking forward to seeing this movie. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, and Tobey Maguire to name a few. The Great Gatsby will hit theaters in late spring (May 10).

Film Review: “Zero Dark Thirty”

23 Jan

Film: Zero Dark Thrity

Best Line: I’m the motherfu$%!# that found this place” – Maya

Review: “Zero. Dark. Thirty!” What a film! The fact that a woman is behind the directing makes it even better. I LOVED it!. I’m often a little leery about going to see any type of war films or anything to do with war. I prefer to watch movies about unrealistic romantic plots, where a man confesses his love to a woman at first sight. (Blame my self-induced Jane Austen romantic coma. I’m still trying to awaken from my romantic coma. It’s been 15 years. There’s no hope for me.) Zero Dark Thirty doesn’t have a single “love scene” and there certainly aren’t any men running around confessing their undying love. Nope. Just the opposite. This movie focuses on the “decade-long manhunt for Al Qaeda terrorist leader Osama bin Laden after the September 2001 attacks and his death at the hands of the Navy S.E.A.L. Team 6 in May 2011.” This film is VERY intense…..and I do mean intense. Do not go to this movie if you have a “weak” heart. There are several scenes during the 2.5 hours of the film, where I thought my heart was going to jump out of my chest. All the unexpected car bombings and shootings was enough to make me sweat. The action in the film matches the film’s intensity. I’m positive it contributed to me being on edge during the movie. There’s a scene where Navy S.E.A.L Team 6 storms Bin laden’s compound and I thought I was going to have a panic attack – I have issues. No judgement. I felt like I was right there with them on the front lines. Kathryn Bigelow’s ability as a director to capture the real emotions of fear, unrest, adrenaline, and confidence during the scene was pretty epic. I might be a tad bit dramatic but when the film concluded and the credits began to roll, I had to stay in my seat for 10 minutes just to catch my breath. I felt like I had just went through battle. Phew…

Jessica Chastain plays Maya – a CIA operative. Maya is sent to Pakistan to interrogate Al Qaeda prisoners who are directly linked to Bin laden. Agent Maya is a tough chick with controlled emotions. She’s passionate about her work and deeply committed to locating and killing Osama bin laden. The dialogue between characters is brilliantly written. The banter between all the CIA agents is quick and witty. You must keep up in order to get all the necessary details for the movie to make sense. (There was a woman in the theater that was playing a version of “where’s waldo” with Osama bin laden’s character. She kept asking her husband which one was Osama. It was quite annoying since she carried on like this during the entire film. I finally had to say “shhh” after an hour and a half of this nonsense.) The first scene in the movie locks you in and doesn’t let go until the end. The movie is told in chronological order and I found it very easy to follow. I’m not sure what was up with “confused connie.”  The storytelling in this film is that of a fully mature bottle of vintage Merlot. Like with any vintage Merlot it takes time for the wine to develop. Once the wine has fully matured the pay-off in taste is divine. That’s how I felt during the course of this movie. The story takes time but its smooth and concise. I’ve seen several of the Oscar nominated movies for best picture, “Zero Dark Thirty” will be my pick. It’s a masterpiece!

*Side note* Hottie Alert! There’s some serious eye candy in this film. Manly type men. (You know the ones. The kind of  men that wear plaid shirts, grow a semi-beard, and chop wood for fireplaces in log cabins) Agent Dan –  played by Jason Clarke and Larry – played by Edgar Ramirez were beautiful to look upon. Each time those scruffy, good-looking, tall drinks of water graced the screen. I was all in. Hey boo! Military men just moved to 2nd place on my dating list. First place belongs to Mr. Darcy from “Pride and Prejudice.” Duh.

Kate Middleton’s “love affair” with Designer Alexander McQueen

22 Jan

The Duchess of Cambridge has a serious love affair with designer Alexander McQueen. Who can blame her. One can only guess that her affections for UK Designer increased after she wed Prince William. Ms. Burton (creative director at Alexander McQueen) was the brilliant design force behind The Duchess’s insanely gorgeous wedding dress. Alexander McQueen is my all time favorite designer! Hands down. No discussion. I’ve been in love with his collections, since I discovered haute couture. This post is to highlight the limitless design skills of Sarah Burton. Ms. Burton has single-handedly designed a slew of youthful, classic, sophisticated, and stunning pieces for the Duchess. I heart everything she has designed. EVERYTHING! Rumor has it that the Duchess of Cambridge has already tapped Burton to outfit her during her pregnancy. Alexander McQueen + maternity clothes = AH-mazing! Most people “ooh ahh” over Kate Middleton but I “ooh ahh” over Sarah Burton and her EPIC design creations. She is EXTRAORDINARY! Long Live McQueen!
