Film Review: “Cloud Atlas” (novel adapted to film)

30 Oct

Film: Cloud Atlas

Review: I grew up watching Sci-fi/Fantasy movies, so the premise of most science fiction films is not that foreign to me. What was foreign was the amount of stories the director and writer expected me to follow in a 3 hour time span. It was a lot to take in. I’m pretty sure if I had read the book prior to seeing the film I would have been better prepared for the sensory overload. There are a total of six separate stories that the audience must follow. The Pacific Journal of Adam Ewing – 1850, Letters from Zedelghem – 1931, Half-Lives: The First Luisa Rey Mystery – 1975, The Ghastly Ordeal of Timothy Cavendish – 2012, An Orison of Sonmi – 2144, Sloosha’s Crossin’an’ Ev’rythin’ After – post-apocalyptic distant future. Although each story has it’s own individual plot the core of each story is reincarnation, we’re all directly connected “from womb to tomb our lives are not our own”. It was a challenge at times for me to grasp the whole reincarnation notion, since my faith teaches me otherwise. However, I’m always game to see someone else’s idea on the afterlife. This movie visually was stunning! When the storylines got a bit foggy, I found myself zoning out admiring the visuals particularly when it came to the scenes involving Neo Seoul -2144. The colors were so vivid it was almost like I could reach out touch them. Especially during the scene involving the fast food restaurant.

One of the frustrating parts about the movie was how quickly is moved. At times I thought I was watching a theatrical ping-pong match. The film bounced around too much. Once you got locked into one story-line it would flip and show another story. It was hard to follow at times. When I could follow the movie there were some beautifully written dialogue. The kind of dialogue that great movies are known for.  I thought the acting was well done by both Halle Berry and Tom Hanks. They both played several characters and although their facial features were disguised, they were still recognizable behind all the makeup and prosthetics. Speaking of makeup, kudos to the makeup department. The physical transformation in all the characters was impressive. The standout actor for me was the insanely talented Jim Boardent who played Captain Molyneux/Vyvyan Ayrs/Timothy Cavendish/Korean Musician/Prescient. It was his role as Timothy Cavendish that really captivated me. The 65-year-old vanity press publisher who was trying to escape his attackers and is confined to a nursing home against his own will. He concocts a plan to free himself along with three other elderly residents. It was the only light-hearted scene in the entire film.

The length of the movie is a bit of an issue. I attended a 5:30pm showing and the movie ended at 8:30pm. If you do decide to see this film I would definitely recommend seeing it on lazy Saturday afternoon. It’s a toss-up for me if I would recommend this film to others not because I didn’t enjoy the film but because most people I know don’t want to sit through a 3 hour movie.

Setting aside the length of the movie and the quick-moving storyline, I still really enjoyed this film! There are times when I like to be challenged when watching a film and this movie definitely fit the bill. For those of you who lack interest in science fiction films painted with reincarnation and adventure well there’s always Anna Karenina which will be in Theatres November 17th!

Best line in the movie: “My life amounts to no more than one drop in a limitless ocean. Yet what is any ocean, but a multitude of drops?”

The opinions about this film are my own honest opinions. My opinions were not influenced by the compensation I received for writing this review.

Kiki’s Kitchen: Chicken Tortilla Soup

25 Oct

I adore homemade soups. I enjoy making my own soups because you can control the amount of sodium you add. Soups sold in stores and restaurants generally have too much sodium, which isn’t good for anyone. Here’s a simple, delicious, low-sodium recipe for Chicken Tortilla Soup. All the ingredients are thrown into a crock pot, left to cook, and make magic happen!

1 quart of (low sodium) chicken broth

4 cups of water

1 can of diced mexican tomatoes (with chiles)

1 can of stew mexican tomatoes (with chiles)

1 TBL of salt

3 cloves of fresh garlic

5 sprigs of fresh cilantro

1 jalapeno finely chopped

1/2 red onion finely chopped

1 1/2 cup of rosted corn

2 cups of shredded cooked chicken breast

Vegetarian Recipe: Follow the above recipe omitting the chicken and substitute veggie broth instead of chicken broth.

STEP ONE: Pour chicken broth, roasted corn, and both cans of tomatoes into a crock pot. Cover and let cook while you prepare the other ingredients.

STEP TWO:  Chop up 1 jalapeno (be sure to remove the seeds if you’re not into spicy). Chop up 3 cloves of garlic, 1/2 red onion, and 5 sprigs of cilantro.

STEP THREE:  Heat pan with 1 teaspoon of oilve oil and saute red onion, garlic, jalapeno, and cilantro. Add cooked veggies to crock pot.

STEP FOUR: Add cooked chicken to crock pot. Cover and let cook on high for 2 hours. ( To make the cook chicken, I baked 3 large chicken breast in the oven. I drizzled olive oil on each chicken breast and seasoned it with a bit of , chili powder, cayenne pepper, and salt and pepper.) If you are in a rush you could always use a rotisserie chicken and chop up the meat.

1. Take four corn tortillas and cut length wise to create strips.

2. Fry in olive oil or bake them in the oven.

3. Set on paper towel to drain excess oil. Sprinkle with a bit of Himalayan pink rock salt. YUM!

STEP FIVE: Garnish with avocado, sour cream, and tortilla chips. Enjoy!

Etsy Spotlight: Scarf Obsession

23 Oct

I’m a lover of scarves. Printed, solid colors, silk, whatever the fabric or color I’m game! I own loads of scarves and add to my collection regularly. Imagine my surprise when I came across a glorious scarf shop on Etsy called ScarfObsession! I’m in love with this shop! Not only do they offer a grand selection of gorgeous printed scarves but they’re prices are brilliant! Wait for it, wait for it…..each scarf sells for $29 to $34! That’s practically FREE! Ok, so maybe I’m being a little over dramatic about how good the prices are.  Anyway, I’ve already ordered the plaid infinity scarf below. Can’t wait to style it with my black leather moto jacket and some skinnies. Holla!

Maison Martin Margiela for H&M Lookbook

19 Oct

This collection is absolutely divine! I’m a big fan of avant-garde fashion. Maison Martin Margiela is genius at creating it! What I particularly like about this collection is the understated minimalist appeal. All the beautiful details are in the structure of the garments. No embellishments, prints, or bright colors. Just solid rich fall colors with unexpected silhouettes. Each piece could stand on its own! I’m smitten with the red Grecian dress and tall burgundy boots!

3 Things for Him

18 Oct

FASHION:  Derek Lam’s leopard printed-smoking slippers and skate board. This high fashion combo is part of  the Target & Neiman Marcus Christmas Collection. I know some of you fell-loves are little shy when it comes to sporting leopard. Its a trendy print that can be quite timeless when worn as a shoe. Step out of your comfort zone and try something a bit different. If you ever get the urge to wear leopard print anywhere else on your body we will need to talk. Just sayin’……

FOOD: Roli Roti Porchetta Sandwich – this here sandwich is a “MAN” sandwich! Pork loin, wrapped in Pork Belly, and slow roasted with herbs until the skin is oh so crispy. The wonder sandwich is then topped with sweet onion marmalade, peppery arugula, and sprinkled with a bit of lavender salt. It’s insane! The men in my office adored this sandwich but us ladies were happy to nosh on it as well.

So, if any of you beautiful men ever find yourself at the San Francisco Ferry Building, be sure to cart your lady over to the Roli Roti Food Truck. I’m positive she will describe you as budding “Food Genius” once again!

TECH: I just got all James Bond on you! That’s right USB cufflinks! Are you dreaming about yourself as James Bond yet? No? Allow me to set the stage. You’re cruising along in your Aston Martin Vanquish (because you got it like that), a beautiful lady is in the passenger seat, and the sun is just about to set. Your destination – a broadway. Suddenly you realize you’ve forgotten the tickets. Your stunning date begins to panic and you smile at her and say, “not to worry, I got this”.  You remove one of your cufflinks (which doubles as a USB). You inset it into your dash-board, and voila the ticket information pops up on the screen. You download the tickets and print them out. Hello! You’re James Bond! Of course you have a printer in your car. Duh! You arrive at the show in record time and your gorgeous date is completely smitten with you! Winning!
