Pearl City: Balmain A/W 2012 Backstage

17 Aug

I have dreams of owning a vintage Balmain dress. I came very close this past February when I spotted a black vintage Balmain gown on shopgoodwill.com. It was stunning but too small. Another opportunity presented itself two months later on eBay, there it was a gold vintage Balmain blazer, I stalked  it for 4 days and missed out on final bidding. Shoot! Plans foiled again.

I’m perched on my couch, eyes fixed on these divine photos from BALMAIN A/W 2012 collection! The intricate embroidery detail, strategically placed pearls, gold trim….this collection definitely pays homage to the opulent garments of the late 1700’s. Très gorg!

Movie of the Week: Bright Star

Movie of the Week: Bright Star

Review: Bright Star, the love story between the insanely talented poet John Keats and the lovely Fanny Brawne. This film is one big poem, spoken through the eyes of the director to her audience. Visually this film is a masterpiece, the cinematography is similar to that of a beautiful Monet painting. There are so many breathtaking scenes in this film that I had to pause it for greater appreciation. I love, I adore, I heart this movie and not because it’s a period film. The depth of this film is much more than your average period film. Like how two seemingly unattached people deal with the love they have for one another when life circumstances prevents them from capturing their happiness. Or how about when you struggle to succeed in your profession that’s also your passion. Throw in the challenges of life and how they don’t improve but get worse. This might sound like a depressing movie but it far from that. Bright Star is a testament to love and its weight. The stronghold that love has on your heart and emotions. Whether its painful or joyful you can’t let it go because once you discover true love it’s inevitable. The dedication that John shows to Fanny and Fanny show to John is so inspiring. They have a connection that transcends physicality. Their love for each other has a way of convincing you that life would be meaningless without the prospect of living and breathing the same air as your soul mate. I have yet to cross paths with the love of my life but I hope when I do I am wise enough to recognize it and never it let it go.

If you’re in the mood for an inspiring love story rich in poetry then definitely check out Bright Star.

Best line in the movie:there is a holiness to the heart’s affection, you know nothing of that.”

Bright Star by: John Keats
Bright star, would I were stedfast as thou art–
Not in lone splendour hung aloft the night
And watching, with eternal lids apart,
Like nature’s patient, sleepless Eremite,
The moving waters at their priestlike task
Of pure ablution round earth’s human shores,
Or gazing on the new soft-fallen mask
Of snow upon the mountains and the moors–
No–yet still stedfast, still unchangeable,

Editorial: Ajak Deng for Nasty Girl

15 Aug

LOVE! There are times when a model brings it….. and then there are times when a model kicks down the door, stands in front of the camera, and demands that all eyes are on her. Ajak is doing just that in these stunning photos. Ajak Deng was born in Sudan but hails from Melbourne, Australia. She got her big break in March 2010 when she graced the runway of Givenchy, Chloe, Marc by Marc Jacobs, and Jean Paul Gaultier.

Kudos to the brilliant photographer Paul Trapani for capturing Ajak raw beauty! BOSS!

WHYRED A/W ’12 Collection

14 Aug

I’m swooning over WHYRED A/W 2012 Collection!  Head Designer Roland Hjort has an amazing talent for designing his street-smart collection with classic silhouettes and modern details. I adore the black silk dress below. The long sleeve sheath dress looks simple enough but as you inspect it a little closer you see that the front bodice is layered with the most delicate draped pleats. The black knit belt gives the dress the perfect amount of edge!

I also heart the men’s chunky knit, army green cardigan below. It’s a must have for fall. That cardigan is begging to be worn with my burgundy skinnies. It’s the simplest details that makes the swedish brand – WHYRED  so loved!

Kiki’s Kitchen: The 10min Taco Salad

11 Aug

This recipe is from my lovely Mama. She use to make this delicious and easy taco salad when we were kids. It was her go to dish on Friday nights when she wanted to prepare something quick and moderately healthy. Everyone in my family has fond memories of this yummy salad, even my Dad. That’s saying a lot since my father is quite the picky eater. Gotta love Pops!

Comic Book Wars: Romance Was Born Collection ’12

10 Aug

Superheros and fashion that seems normal, right? I love an unfiltered designer, one who can design a collection without any limitations, creating only what they envision and not stopping until that vision has become a reality by gracing the runway. This insanely colorful, gorgeous, eclectic, collection is just that. The the dynamic duo Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales are the creative geniuses behind Romance Was Born S/S 2012 Collection. Plunkett and Sales teamed up with Marvel comics to create an one-of-kind collection featuring comic book phrases (POW! BAM!) colors, and even the superheros themselves. I can’t decide what piece I adore more. It’s always fun to rock an unexpected piece to the office. My eyes are on the “The Hulk” dress below. The silhouette of the dress has clean lines and slightly structure shoulders. Throw a blazer over it and you have an amazing look. No one would ever suspect that you possess superhuman powers underneath your blazer.

3 Things for Him

9 Aug

FASHION: The Pea Coat! Fall is just around the corner and some of you Menz might be thinking about a new coat. A killer pea coat is just the ticket, especially if it’s military-inspiried. The pea coat has been around for ages and the classic style looks great on any man. In fact I haven’t seen a man in a pea coat that I didn’t want to follow (to give him a compliment) I’m not to stalker.  The structure, the fit, the round metal buttons, and epaulets on the shoulders makes this coat tough enough to do battle in.

FOOD: Grilled PB & J. Ok, fell-loves I realize you are all grown, strong, strapping men. Well maybe some of you aren’t so strong and strapping but who’s taking note. Anywho, remember the comfort of a classic peanut butter and jelly sandwich? Well here’s a way to step up your PB&J game. Take two slice of bread, add your favorite peanut and jelly and grill the heck out that sammie. Maybe, invite you lady over and show off you’re sandwich making skills. Honey is an awesome substitute, if you’re not into the jelly. Your results, a warm, gooey, crunchy sandwich. Doesn’t that sound divine!

TECH: ThermoDock. So you’re feeling a little under the weather or maybe you want to check the temperature of the weather outside. Well here’s a little nifty companion that plug-ins into your iPhone and provides you with that exact information. The ThermoDock connects to your iPhone and allows you take the temperature of yourself and your dog. Yep, that’s right this device is fit for your four-legged friend as well. The price is a bit steep at $95 a pop. It might be cheaper just to check your temp the old fashion way.
